How Do I Know If I Already Have REAL ID and Does A Minor Need One?
Article written by Delta Driving School
ID cards, and even driver’s licenses, are not always REAL IDs. According to the REAL ID Act, all IDs that do not meet its standards must clearly say so. This makes it easy to determine whether you already have a REAL ID or not simply by looking at your ID.
For things like driver’s licenses this information is often found in one of the top corners and it will say something like: “Federal Limits Apply” if it does not count as a REAL ID. Since some States do not meet the qualifications to have REAL IDs it is best to look up about your own State or to call your DMV. If you got your driver’s license before the DMV started issuing REAL ID driver’s licenses in January 22, 2018, even if you gave all the necessary documentation then, you will need to give all the necessary documentation again in order to get your REAL ID.
Minors under the age of 18 will not need a REAL ID, but if they are accompanied by an adult the adult will need one. For flights in the same state minors do not necessarily need any ID at all, but for flights out of the U.S. a passport is needed, and for minors under 16 years of age a parental consent form is also needed for minors flying alone.
